Last weeks Grape Stomping was probably the highlight of our summer so far! It is, without a doubt, one of my favorite activities I have ever done with the kids! Before we got started, though, I wanted to have a plan for how to put our smashed grapes to use. We are not about wasting anything here, much less good food! While my first choice was making wine I thought grape jelly would be a little more kid friendly!
I am a novice to jam making, so this sugar free, pectin free, freezer jam from The Herbgardner sounded like a nice simple option! We pretty much stuck to the tutorial, except our grapes were pre-smushed. Once the kids were through stomping (We made sure to use a clean container and thoroughly cleaned our feet ) I dumped the whole bin into a big pot and put it on the stove to simmer. Our grape mixture did have water added since I put some in the sensory bin to make the grapes float around a bit. It required quite a long time to cook down in the end, so if you are looking to speed up the process, I would suggest either not adding water to your sensory bin in the first place, or draining off some of the water before putting it in the pot.
Our four bags of grapes produced three, 1/2 pint jars of delicious jam! I was truly impressed that such an amazing jelly could be made using only fruit! It was a hit with my entire family (including my picky husband who is always skeptical of my “healthy shenanigans”)! Although this turned out to be quite a labor intensive process, it was definitely a fun way to spend a drizzly summer day, and the best part is I have a freezer full of yummy, healthy, jam!
