The girls had a hay day exploring the letter H for this week’s ABC’s of Messy Play activity! What did we play with? Why hay, of course! With fall just around the corner, this was a perfect activity to build excitement for the upcoming season and sneak in a little learning at the same time!
This activity was super simple to set up. First, I went about the house collecting toys and other items to hide in the hay. I looked mostly for things that started with the letter H, but I also wanted some that did not. Once I had our items selected, I dumped a bale of hay ( we found ours on sale at Hobby Lobby! ) into the wading pool and hid the toys under the straw. Excitement mounted as the girls watched!
After everything was set up, I handed each of the girls a basket and explained that it was their mission to find all the hidden treasures that start with the letter H! They ran outside eager to begin!
The girls really enjoyed hunting for their treasures! Emily excitedly uncovered item after item, announcing weather or not it was an H! Little sister was in awe of this new sensory experience and really took her time to explore!
At 15 months, she is just beginning so show interest in letters and letter sounds so this was a great opportunity to talk about it using real life objects!
After all the H items were collected, the girls were free to explore and get messy!!!
They went wild with they hay while I sat back and watched their little minds at work. It is so much fun to see the different ideas they come up with all on their own! I could go on and on about how much they enjoyed getting messy with the hay, but I think the pictures speak for themselves!
Messy play is my favorite type of activity to do with my girls! Amazing things happen when I let my guard down and turn over the reigns. They always surprise me with the things they think of and seeing the pure joy on their faces is enough to make the mess worth while!
