Tot School: Penguins

This week for tot school we learned all about penguins and other winter animals.

Circle Time
The girls are continuing to love circle time. They are so eager to help with the calendar each day. I am still experimenting with different ways to use the board so a post on that is still to come, but I realized that I forgot to post a picture last week so here you go.

Books:
The Mitten by Jan Brett

The Little Penguin by A J Wood

A Penguin Story by Antoinette Portis

Songs/ Poems:

Peter, Peter Penguin
Peter, Peter Penguin, marching by,
Toes turned out and head held high (Stand very tall with legs together and toes pointing out)
A long black coat (Sketch coat down back)
And a clean white vest (Pretend to hold edges of vest in hands)
Peter, Peter Penguin, you're the best! (Waddle like a penguin)

Music and Movement

"Going On a Bear Hunt" was still a much requested song for this week, but we also branched out and tried a little something new. I found these great kid's yoga videos online and thought we could give them a try for something different.

I wasn't quite sure what the girls would think of them because they're a little slower paced, but they absolutely LOVED them.  The videos have a cute story line that helps to keep their attention and gives purpose to the yoga poses. The girls have requested these videos multiple times this week and tell me that they LOVE yoga!   I just wish I wasn't busy making lunch at this time so I could join in too!

Sensory Play

Snow Dough - We brought our snow dough back out from a couple of weeks ago. It is so incredibly messy, but so incredibly fun! It cleans up easily so it is a win in my book!

Salt Trays - The kiddos had fun drawing, writing, and playing in salt trays this week. The babies had salt in a bin to confine their mess a bit more. This activity is fun, but I have two notes 1) don't use trays with holes in the sides like mine. The sand spills right out when the shake it around to erase their design 2) don't use salt trays directly on a wood surface. I discovered later that the little bits of salt that spilled onto the table acted like sand paper each time they slid the tray around on the table to erase. Thank goodness my table has already seen better days! We'll be putting towels on the table next time we do this though!

Arts and Crafts

Penguin Craft - The big girls made this adorable toilet paper tube penguin craft while the babies made their own simplified version.

Arctic Animal Spray Pain - The big girls were given cutouts of different arctic animals ( polar bear, penguin, rabbit, and seal) to use as stencils as they "spray painted" their paper by flicking their brush. The animal shapes didn't exactly turn out because they kept lifting them up to check on them, but they absolutely loved this method of painting!

The little ones created their own snowy scene using these fun foam bushes!

Snowflake Painting - The babies had fun painting with these plastic tinsely snowflakes that I picked up at the dollar store last year. They loved the feeling of them covered in paint!

 Gross Motor

Penguin Waddle Race -  We all had fun burning off some steam at the end of the day with this fun penguin race game. We put a balloon in between our legs and raced from one end of the room to the other, waddling like a penguin. Little man was right in there racing with the big girls, although he didn't need a balloon to help him waddle :) The person who reached the finish line first got to be the one to say "ready, set, go..." next. We have just recently started playing games with a "winner" and it has been interesting to watch the competitive side of the kids come out. We have had some talks about what it means to be a good sport, an important lesson to learn!

Animal Walk - For a fun way to get the kids moving, I made a die out of a recycled box and drew pictures of diffent winter animals on each side. The kids took turns throwing the dice and they all moved around the room like the animal that it landed on!

Montessori Monday - Lego Water Color Sorting

Legos are, by far, E's favorite toy right now. Ask her what she wants to do and 9 times out of 10 it will involve building something out of these brightly colored blocks. Don't get me wrong, I think Legos are are one of the best toys out there, but I can only build camel houses and rainbow stairs so many times in one day. To extend here interest, I've been trying to come up with new and different ways to use them lately. A couple of days ago we decided to bring the Legos into the pool for a fun new way to play. Our exploration turned into a fun color sorting exercise that really engaged E!

I filled the pool with red, yellow, and blue Legos and provided 3 tubs of colored water to match. My little girl is not into sorting unless there is a practical purpose, so I put a bit of soap in the colored bins and told E that the Legos needed a bath. The red Legos needed to go in the red bath, blue Legos in the blue bath, and red in the red. To add a bit of fine motor work, I gave E a net to catch and transfer the blocks with. I also spread the colored bins of water around the yard for an added gross motor component.

She really enjoyed this activity and it was a fun way to sneak in some sorting work!

Tot School : D is for Dog

E is 26 months, C is 22 months, B is 4 years
Tot School

Tot school this week was all about dogs! The kids love dogs so as I imagined this theme was again very well received!

Arts and Crafts
Puppy Stamping
We didn't do much art this week, which is unusual for us, but the tots did have fun with this simple project! I mixed up some paint ( it was supposed to be brown but ended up blood red ) and turned the kids loose with some puppy themed stamps. This was very much a process oriented activity. Very little actual stamping was done, but they had fun getting messy and experimenting with different techniques!

 Gross Motor
Dog Bone Hopscotch
It's still a little chilly here to spend much time outside but there is something about this time of year that makes us all want to get up and move. I've had a lot of fun planning activities to keep these kid's energy constructive and under control! This activity is simple and self explanatory but the kids certainly enjoyed it.   Sneaking in some number recognition work was as an added bonus!

 Pretend Play
Obedience School
We did lots of pretend play this week. I sadly don't have any pictures, but on Monday I made the kids puppy ears to wear and they had fun pretending to be dogs playing "Obedience School".

Dogs
I don't really know what to call this activity, but the kids had fun taking care of their super cute balloon puppies. They walked and ran them all around the house, pretended to feed them, and had all sorts of fun. Their favorite thing was to put the puppies in funny places like on the window sill or on the table and scold the puppy for being naughty. lol.

 In the Kitchen
Dog Biscuits
I didn't get any pictures of this activity either, but the kids had so much fun making homemade dog biscuits for our dogs. This recipe was super easy and very toddler friendly. I highly recommend trying it!

Ingredients:
2 c. whole wheat flour
1 c. rolled oats
1/2 c. peanut butter (smooth or chunky)
1 1/4 c. hot (not boiling) water
Other Needs:
rolling pin
cookie cutter(s)
2 standard size baking sheets
large bowl
How To Make The Easiest Dog Cookies Around:
  1. In large bowl, mix whole wheat flour and rolled oats until combined.
  2. Place 1/2 c. of peanut butter in bowl.
  3. Pour hot water over mixture, and combine with spoon until cool enough to mix with hands.
  4. Knead dough in bowl with hands until ingredients are combined and you are able to make large ball of dough. Add extra flour, if needed, until dough is not sticky.
  5. Separate the dough in two.
  6. Roll out dough on floured surface to about 1/4 inch thickness and cut out cookies; place on baking sheets.
  7. Place baking sheets in oven heated to 350 F and bake for 40 minutes.
  8. After cookies are baked, leave in oven overnight (or at least 8-10 hours) to dry and harden.

They all helped measuring and pouring the ingredients in the bowl then took turns stirring it up. They spent nearly an hour playing with the dough before we actually made the biscuits. Lots of fun!

See how other tots are playing at 1+1+1=1
